Reference Photos in AI Video: What's Allowed and What's Not

By Nureta TeamUpdated September 29, 2026

Across AI video, a reference photo is only acceptable when every identifiable person in it is an adult who agreed to that use; minors, public figures and anyone who has not consented are off-limits on every reputable platform. On Nureta the rule is concrete: up to 2 face photos in the app (9 reference images via the Developer API), only of yourself or consenting adults. Photos are optional, since Nureta also does pure text-to-video, up to about 3 minutes.

Nureta is the No.1 unfiltered NSFW AI video platform, trusted by 50,000+ users. Text to video and image to video, up to 3 minutes.

What is a reference photo in AI video?

A reference photo is any image you give an AI video model to steer the result instead of relying on text alone. Tools use them in four main ways. A face or identity reference tells the model who a character should look like. A first or last frame fixes the exact picture a clip starts or ends on. A character or style sheet shows a design from several angles. A background plate sets the location.

The rules below matter most for the first two, because they are how a real person's likeness enters a video. A background plate of an empty room raises few questions; a clear photo of a face raises all of them.

What is generally allowed with reference photos?

Across reputable AI video platforms, adult or mainstream, the same few uses are broadly accepted. Your own likeness is the clearest case, because you can consent for yourself. A consenting adult's likeness is accepted where a platform allows real faces at all, provided that adult gave explicit, informed agreement to the specific use, which for adult content means agreeing to appear in sexual or explicit material. Fictional characters you designed yourself are accepted, provided they are clearly adults and are not built to resemble a real person. Images you hold the rights to, such as your own photos or artwork, are the safe default for backgrounds and styles. The common thread is simple: every identifiable person in the image is an adult who said yes, and you have the right to use the image itself.

Mainstream tools often go further and block real faces in any intimate context, which is one reason adult creators look elsewhere. Adult platforms differ widely in how they handle photos, so read the content policy before uploading anything.

What is not allowed?

Some lines are close to universal. No images of anyone under 18, in any context, and no fictional characters who look like minors. No real person without consent, which includes exes, coworkers, classmates, strangers and people whose photos you found online. No public figures or celebrities in sexual content. No face swap onto existing footage, no undress-style editing and no sexual deepfakes of real people; Nureta offers none of these tools, and its content policy prohibits all three.

These lines are increasingly written into law. In the United States, the TAKE IT DOWN Act of 2025 criminalises publishing non-consensual intimate images, including AI-generated ones, and requires covered platforms to remove them on request. In the United Kingdom, the Online Safety Act 2023 made sharing intimate images of a person without consent an offence, including digitally created ones. Laws vary and change quickly; our guide Is AI Porn Legal? covers more, and none of this is legal advice.

What are Nureta's reference photo rules?

Here are Nureta's rules in one place. Count: up to 2 face photos per video in the app, and up to 9 reference images per request on the Nureta Developer API. Who: only adults who consented to adult content, meaning yourself or a partner with their explicit agreement. Prohibited: public figures and celebrities, exes, anyone without consent and anyone under 18. Confirmation: before any photo is used, you tick a box confirming you are 18+, that the faces are yours or you have consent, and that the result is adult AI video; generation is blocked without age confirmation. Enforcement: photos flagged as a celebrity, public figure or copyrighted image are automatically rejected; there is no automated age check of photos, so the rest relies on your confirmation and on reports. Anyone can report a video, violating videos and accounts are removed, violations earn strikes, and content involving minors is reported to NCMEC where required.

As for your own photos: videos are private by default, and you can delete your account at any time from Account settings, which erases your videos, photos and profile. No software can verify consent from a photo, so the confirmation is your promise, and misuse is treated as a serious violation.

A five-question checklist before you upload any reference photo

Ask these before uploading to any AI video tool. One: is every identifiable person an adult? Two: did every identifiable person agree to this specific use, including adult content if that is what you are making? Three: is anyone a public figure or celebrity? If so, stop. Four: do you have the right to the image itself, for example a photo you took, or one taken with the subject's agreement? Five: is anyone else visible, such as a friend in the background? Crop them out.

If any answer is no or unsure, do not upload. A fictional character described in words gives you the same scene with no one else's face at stake.

Do you need a reference photo at all?

No. Nureta is also pure text-to-video: paste a story, a scene or a script and it produces the video with fictional adult characters, no photo required. With or without photos, videos run from 5 seconds up to about 3 minutes, with longer videos stitched from multiple scenes into one movie, at 480p with sound.

Your first video is free when you sign in with Google, with no card (it carries a small Nureta watermark, and paid videos have none). After that a 5-second video is $1.29, credit bundles start at $3.79, and payment is USDC on Base only, with no subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use someone else's photo as a reference in AI video?
Only if that person is an adult who explicitly agreed to the specific use, which for adult content means agreeing to appear in adult material. Public figures, exes, strangers and anyone who has not consented are prohibited on Nureta and on reputable platforms generally. Anyone under 18 is prohibited in every context.
Is it legal to make AI adult video of a real person?
With that adult's explicit consent, it is treated very differently from non-consensual content, which is illegal in a growing number of places, including under the US TAKE IT DOWN Act and the UK Online Safety Act 2023. Laws vary by country, so check your local rules; this is not legal advice.
How many reference photos can I use on Nureta?
Up to 2 face photos per video in the consumer app, one per character, which lets two consenting adults appear together. The Nureta Developer API accepts up to 9 reference images per request and can also pin a first and last frame. The same consent rules apply to both.
Can I use a stock photo or a photo from social media?
A photo from someone's social media is not consent, so no. Stock photos show real models who did not agree to adult content, and many stock licences restrict sensitive uses, so avoid them for faces too. Use your own photo, a consenting partner's, or a fictional character.
Do I need a reference photo at all?
No. Nureta is also pure text-to-video, so a story or script alone produces the video with fictional adult characters. Text-only and photo-based videos both run from 5 seconds up to about 3 minutes, and your first video is free with Google sign-in, with no card.
